An Actress of No Importance is a re-imagining of the play by Oscar Wilde. It takes his satire of
upper-class English stuffiness and class conceit and transfers it to the expatriate “British colony”
of 1930s Hollywood. This is a world where anyone in a pith helmet and with a Tory accent can
make “real money” by doing warmed-over updates of Shakespeare, Dickens, and Austen with an
occasional bit of Sir Walter Scott thrown in for spice.

The Understudy is a dazzling comedy by Theresa Rebeck about an uphill effort to stage the Broadway premiere of a newly discovered Franz Kafka masterpiece. Professional and personal lives collide during an understudy rehearsal, when the woman in charge finds that her ex-fiance has been cast as the understudy. Throw in a stoned lightboard operator, an omnipresent intercom system, and producers threatening to shut down the show and the big question becomes: Will—and should—the show go on?
